Hair Types: Classification Systems
Hair type refers to your hair’s curl pattern, which are categorized by numbers and letters. The numbers — 1 to 4 — refer to curl families and the letters — A to C — indicate how tightly wound the actual curls are, says celebrity hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor.
The hair typing systems that we know today have different origin. Let’s have a look on the most known of them.
Andre Walker System
It was selebrity stylist Andre Walker who introduced the hair typing system on Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1990s. Although it was to promote his own new line of hair products, he first divided people’s hair into categories. All types of hair from straight to curly were labeled as four categories:
- Coily (Kinky).
Later, the sub-categories was determined for each of these categories, dividing them into distinct segments based on texture and curl style. Most naturals gravitate toward this hair typing method, which is possibly the most common. Here’s the complete hair type based on the Andre Walker System.
I also use the F.I.A Hair Typing System, which seems to be built off both Andre Walker’s and LOIS’s hair typing systems. It also includes aspects from the Roberto Sant beauty school, adding a rich layer of information for clients to analyze.
In common, the F.I.A Hair Typing method is very close to Andrew Walker System, but it divides the hair just into three categories: (1) curl definition, (2) the presence of the majority of your hair fibers, and (3) total length.
How To Determine Your Hair Type
|Hair Texture||First and foremost, let’s discuss the hair texture. The natural form or pattern of your hair is referred to as hair texture. If you’re not sure which division you belong in, don’t use any items and let your hair air-dry the next time you wash it.|
|Hair Structure||Hair structure refers to the thickness of the fibers, which influences how well the hair holds styles and reacts to different materials. Your hair can be classified into three types: fine, medium, and coarse (or thick). Remove a single strand from your hairbrush and lay it down on a plain, smooth surface, and see which division your hair belongs to determine its structure.|
|Hair Porosity||The capacity of your hair to absorb moisture and substance is referred to as porosity. Knowing how porous your hair is will help you decide what sort of products you can use on your hair, but it isn’t as well-known as hair type and form.|
|Scalp Moisture||Even so, determining the state of your scalp may be more difficult than it seems, since you might have both an oily scalp and rough, split ends. We suggest checking your hair and scalp on the second day of a wash to assess how sticky or not your scalp is.|
Natural hair colors
|Black||Since people in Asia and Africa appear to have lower levels of tyrosinase in their bodies, black is the most common hair color found there.|
|Brown||Brown human hair comes in a variety of colors, from brown-ebony, brown-mahogany, brown-oak, and so on. The development of a mutation, a particular difference in the gene located at a certain location on the chromosome, is responsible for the various shades of brown. People with brown-ebony hair, for example, have certain alleles that catalyze enzymes that contain a lot of brown pigment.|
|Blond||When there is a smaller amount of brown eumelanin present and other pigments are absent, blond hair develops. Blond-haired people are usually found in European countries.|
|Red||The red hair color is very uncommon all over the world. Northern Europe, mainly the United Kingdom and Ireland, is home to them. Red hair is caused by a recessive gene. Since pheomelanin does not shield the skin from radiation, red-haired individuals are at a greater risk of sunburns and skin cancer. Skin cancer is more common in people with red hair genes.|
How To Style Different Hair Types
Thick hair may be wavy and smooth, thick and wiry, or curly and coarse, but it is often defined by its fullness. As a result, this hairstyle can feel unmanageable at times and needs daily haircuts to stay in good condition.
|It’s all for upkeep when it comes to thick hair. If you have a lot of mop on top, you’ll have to make frequent trips to the chop shop. Short haircuts are really trendy for them. Long hairstyles, on the other hand, are ideal for thick hair. When it gets longer, the weight will help hold it in place.||If you want to add a boost to your hair (for example, a quaff), apply mousse or gel to the root region and blow-dry. If you want a sleeker look, add the gel to wet hair so it retains its form without growing.|
The hair of Asians is typically shiny and thick. This hair form may find it more difficult to maintain styles created with heated tools without the use of additional hair products.
|Sharp geometric shapes are ideal for Asian hair since they can be styled with little or no effort. A short crop is another eye-catching look that works well with this hairstyle.||In Asian hair, adding texture is very significant. Apply a good hairspray to hold styles in place after using clay to help establish a definition.|
Fine hair is difficult to style since it seems like there isn’t anything, to begin with. Fine hair loses length and texture, is limp, and the scalp is often visible.
|In general, the ear-to-shoulder length is called ‘longish,’ but layered millennial curtains or a mid-length sweeping back look are both perfect ways to avoid the hegemony of lifeless locks.||For fine hair, the aim is to add thickness, which is better accomplished with a blow-dry lotion for thickness and a dry powder for density.|
Wavy hair is a bit of a wuss, unable to decide if it should be curly or smooth, leaving those of this hairstyle completely baffled as to what to do with it.
|The easiest way to style wavy hair is to keep it short on the back and sides and longer on top for movement and form.||A sea salt spray for texture, accompanied by clay to finish and keep in place, is a fine tool to use on wavy hair. Your fingers and a hairdryer are also the perfect options for brushing wavy hair.|
How To Find Your Hair Type – Hair Care Tips For Straight, Wavy, And Curly Hair
How To Care For Different Hair Types
|Straight Hair||This hair type is common with women because it is easy to grow out and has a lot of natural shimmers. Straight hair tends to get greasy easily, so you will need to wash it more often and use things like dry shampoo in between washes.|
|Wavy Hair||The biggest issue with wavy hair is that it frizzes easily. Controlling frizz without dragging down your natural curl is the answer to caring for wavy hair. Your main worries are retaining the wave while applying moisture and height.|
|Curly Hair||Nobody likes frizz, but if you have curly hair, it’s a relentless struggle you’ll have to combat. Keeping your hair moisturized is important for controlling frizz. Shampoos and conditioners can hydrate the hair, while mousses, creams, and jellies can provide definition and power.|
|Very Kinky Hair||If you have really curly or kinky hair, it can be difficult to know which items would work for you. It all depends on the length and shape of your hair, so if you need advice picking the best cosmetics or hairstyle, speak to your stylist.|
What is the rarest hair type?
The hair form 1A is the rarest. It is most often seen in Asian people. The most common hair type, on the other hand, is 1B. It’s straight and smooth, but it’s not completely flat. Hair that is naturally straight with no curl pattern is classified as Type 1. Straight hair grows more easily and quickly than other hairstyles. This hairstyle is generally very rare.
Which hair type is most attractive?
Thin hair was deemed the most attractive in the straight category, while the hair of a medium circumference was deemed the most attractive in the wavy type. Ultimately, when it came to the influence of hair diameter, type, and color on age, fitness, and beautiful interpretation of hair, there was a lot of difference.
Do redheads go GREY or white?
Red hair never goes grey; when the time comes, it merely fades to white through rose gold. Since ginger hair maintains its natural pigment for a much longer period of time than other colors, there’s no reason to be concerned with going grey. Over time, red hair fades to a glorious palette of faded copper, rosy-blonde, and silvery-white colors.
What is the thickest hair type?
The majority of people have medium hair, which is smoother than fine hair. Specific hairs have the same two hair layers as fine hair, but they can also have a third medulla layer.
